7. SAY NO TO DAIRY

Today I must get on my soap box to proclaim, “Milk does not do a body good!” Cow’s milk is really good for only one species–baby calves. In reality, milk causes much disease plus much animal suffering. .

Perhaps it is because I was so deluded by the Dairy Industry, with their false advertising, that I am zealous in my opposition.

I was an adult when I first realized milk contributes to osteoporosis, allergies, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis and many other illnesses. In the nineties milk became even more harmful. Monsanto created a shot called the IGF-growth factor, which made cows produce at least 20 percent more milk than normal. Canada, the European nations and many others watched this practice, learned of the harmful consequences, and outlawed the use of the IGF-growth factor in their countries. In America, money talks, and our leaders supported Monsanto.

In making the cow produce more milk, her bag expands causing mastitis. To control this infection, more antibiotics are given. When human beings drink cow’s milk, they are getting a large serving of hormones, antibiotics, pus and bacteria. No wonder dairy is being blamed for much of the cancer in our land.

Another reason to stop our use of cow’s milk is the awful suffering of cattle. A cow is kept constantly pregnant, then separated from her baby at birth. In spite of the pleading cries, the cow is taken away to continue to be a milk machine and the baby grows to be eaten or to become a dairy cow.

In a starving world, our dairy industry is using an exorbitant amount of land and water. Far better for us, the animals, and the land is to get our calcium from these sources:

1/2 c collards 188 mg
1/2 c kale 90 mg
1/2 c broccoli 75 mg
1 orange 41 mg
1/2 c pinto beans 109 mg
1 c cooked oatmeal 132 mg
2 T sesame seeds 258 mg

Robert Cohen, in his daily column, notmilk.com, writes blatantly about the harm of cow’s milk and the animal suffering it causes. Anyone who reads his column would soon join in saying, “MILK DOES A BODY NO GOOD!”

Plant milks can be bought, but the healthiest milk can be made in our own kitchens:

RICE MILK
2/3 c hot, cooked brown rice
1/3 c raw cashews or sunflower seeds
1 t vanilla
1/2 t salt
1-2 T honey
3 c hot water
Blend the rice with a small amount of water until
smooth. Strain, chill and serve. For use in cooking,
omit the vanilla and honey.
ALMOND MILK

3/4 c blanched almonds
3 1/4 c water
2 T honey
1/4 t salt
1 t vanilla
Blend almonds with a small amount of water, then add
remaining water and other ingredients. Whiz until
smooth. Strain, chill and serve. For use in cooking, omit
the honey and vanilla.
CASHEW MILK
1 c raw cashews
1 c hot water
1/4 t salt
1 t vanilla
3 T honey
3 c water
Blend one cup cashews with one cup of hot water. Add
remaining ingredients. Whiz until smooth. Strain, chill
and serve. For cooking, omit the honey and vanilla.
