52. PREVENT MELANOMA WITH 4 STEPS
Johnny had a bout with melanoma. After surgery, the doctor gave him an all-clear, but his wife Nora is worried the cancer will return because of his bad habits. He drinks colas and iced tea; he eats meat and white bread and he is badly overweight and doesn’t exercise.
Johnny is a difficult case, but he is alive so we must find a way for Nora to help him. It will take a lot of her time, but I think it might be possible for her to very subtly help her husband, who sounds like he is trying to destroy himself.
First, the drinks should be exchanged for water. The liver and kidneys have to detoxify and dispose of the harmful chemicals in these drinks, making it impossible for them to perform their normal work. Thus the drinks cause dehydration, reduce immunity and damage health. The drinks contribute to Johnny’s weight problem, because the overworked liver cannot metabolize the fat in his food.
Nora cannot prevent Johnny from buying drinks, but she doesn’t have to buy them for him; neither should she drink with him. She can buy matching drink cups, then attempt to strike up a contest to see if he can drink as much water daily as she can drink. Ultimately, Johnny should drink half his weight in ounces of water, but Nora can start with two quarts of water daily, which would be eight cups each. Then she should add more water each day until Johnny is consuming his recommended amount.
Secondly, Nora must do everything in her power to get Johnny off his meat/white bread diet. This will not be easy, but if she will place three healthy meals on the table at meal time, perhaps she can win this battle, especially if she plans extra-special tasty foods.
Cruciferous vegetables are a group of foods which might be called the “Anti-Cancer Family.” Scientists have placed them at the top of the list when it comes to preventing cancer. These vegetables include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi and mustard. Broccoli has the highest anti-cancer activity of all the cruciferous vegetables, containing 33 compounds that help prevent cancer.
Nora would be wise to serve one of these vegetables every day. Almost 100 percent of the foods that heal can be placed in one big category—plant foods. Examples of other foods high in protection against cancer besides cruciferous vegetables are legumes, blueberries, oranges, oats, tomatoes and walnuts; however, most plant foods contain nutrients that have healing power, making it vital for Nora to place only plant food on the table for all three meals.
The third step is to help Johnny become physically active. Nora can plan to walk at least two miles daily and increase the distance to at least three miles. Hopefully she can entice Johnny to go with her by planning a time when he is free. Being physically active is vital in lowering the risk of cancer—one study showed a 50 percent decrease.
The last step is the easiest, yet the most important—add the healing power of the Word of God. Our Saviour healed with His Word. That same power is available in the Bibles that we have in our homes. Proverbs 4:22 reads: “For they (His Words) are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.” Nora can read verses to Johnny every morning and every night. She can write a verse on a card and tuck it in his pocket in the morning, suggesting he read it throughout the day. The Word not only has healing power—it gives power to overcome weakness, making it a positive influence in both their lives.
Hopefully Johnny will be challenged by Nora’s feminine wiles to practice these four steps, thus preventing another bout with cancer.
